From Text to Art: Creating Stunning Images with Midjourney

Welcome to this beginner-friendly guide on using Midjourney, an exciting AI-powered text-to-image generator! If you’ve ever wondered how to turn your words into stunning visuals, you’re in the right place.

To embark on this creative journey, you’ll need a Discord account – it’s your gateway to unlocking the magic of Midjourney.

Before we dive into the world of AI-generated images, there’s one important thing to note: Midjourney offers different subscription plans, the cheapest option costs $10 per month.

There are two distinct methods for creating images using Midjourney through Discord. Let’s explore both options:

Option 1: Joining Midjourney’s Discord Server:

One way is to become a part of Midjourney’s official Discord community. By doing this, you can collaborate with others in shared rooms to create images.

However, it’s important to note that when you use this method, your images will be visible to others, and you’ll also have access to view their creations. If you choose this route, you can join Midjourney’s Discord server by following this link: http://discord.gg/midjourney.

Additionally, being part of this community will keep you informed about updates and announcements related to Midjourney, and it’s a great place to seek help or share your questions with the community if you ever run into any difficulties.

Option2: Creating Your Private Midjourney Server:

Alternatively, you can opt for a more private approach by setting up your own dedicated Midjourney server. When you create your server in this manner, your images remain private, visible only to you.

This method provides a higher level of privacy and control over your creative process. It’s the preferred option for many users, including myself, and I’ll guide you through the steps to set up your private server, so you can enjoy Midjourney in your own personal space.

Now let’s get ready to explore the wonders of Midjourney and unleash your creativity!

To begin, the first step is to either create a new account or log in to Discord, a popular communication platform.

You can access Discord by visiting https://discord.com/ on your web browser.

If you prefer, you also have the option to install Discord directly on your PC or laptop – that’s what I’ve done myself for added convenience.

Once you’ve successfully logged in to Discord, the next important task is to set up a new server. Below, I’ve laid out clear and easy-to-follow instructions on how to accomplish this:

STEP 1: Click the + to add a new server.

STEP 2: Click “Create My Own”

STEP 3: Click “For me and my friends”

STEP 4: Name your server and click “Create”

STEP 5: Click “Add your first app” on the bottom-right

STEP 6: Click “Check it out”

STEP 7: Search for “Midjourney”

STEP 8: Click “Midjourney Bot”

STEP 9: Click “Add to Server”

STEP 10: Choose your server from the dropdown list and click “Continue”

STEP 11: Agree to let it have the permissions it asks for.

STEP 12: Type “/subscribe” in the message area and press Enter

STEP 13: You should get a direct message (DM) from Midjourney letting you know how you can subscribe. Click the discord icon on the top-left.

STEP 14: Click on the Midjourney Bot and you should see a web site link.  This is a personal link so I am not providing a screenshot of mine.  Do not share this link with anyone.  Click on it to go to their web site.

STEP 15: Here you can choose your plan and pay.  Since you used your  personal link, Midjourney knows your Discord server.  Once you subscribe, you can head back over to the Discord server to begin using it to create AI generated images. I chose the Basic Plan. You can always upgrade later.

Let’s get started on the basic of using Midjourney!

Type “/help” and press Enter.  This is where you will be able to get help and basic commands.  You can see those basic commands here.

You can see the “/imagine” command.  I’m going to go with “/imagine cat” to see what I get.  It takes some time, but this is what it returned.  Very detailed!

Within Midjourney, there’s a feature known as “Fast Time Remaining.” Think of it as a pool of minutes that comes with your subscription.

These minutes represent the time required to create the images you request. The number of minutes you receive varies depending on the subscription plan you’ve chosen.

To check your remaining Fast Time, simply use the command “/info.”

Now, let’s talk about the buttons you’ll find below your generated image.

Among them, you’ll notice a “refresh” button. Clicking on this button will rerun the same “/imagine” task, resulting in four entirely new images, different from the initial set.

But what if you come across an image you like and want variations of it? That’s where the “V” buttons come into play.

For example, let’s say you adore the cat in the forest image but want something slightly different. By clicking on “V3,” you’ll generate four new versions of that particular image, each with its own unique twist.

It’s a handy way to explore variations of images you find appealing.

Here are the four new variations:

If you come across an image you like and want to focus on it individually, you can utilize the “U” buttons.

For instance, if you find yourself drawn to image number 3 once more, simply click on “U3.”

This action will isolate and display that specific image, allowing you to give it your undivided attention and further explore its details.

Click on the image to view it in a larger size. To save it as a 1024 x 1024 pixel-sized .png file, simply right-click on the image and select the option to save it.

Beneath this newly displayed image, you’ll find additional buttons. Here’s a breakdown of what they do.

  • Upscale: This button increases the image’s resolution, enhancing its overall quality.
  • Vary Buttons: These buttons offer the option to create variations of your image, either stronger or subtler. Similar to the “V” buttons mentioned earlier, they generate a fresh grid of four image options, allowing you to explore different takes on your selected image.
  • Zoom Buttons: The zoom buttons enable you to zoom in and out on the image without altering its content. It’s a handy tool for examining details or getting a broader view.
  • Arrow (Pan) Buttons: These arrow buttons allow you to pan the image in a specific direction. For example, clicking the right arrow will reveal what’s to the right of the current image, creating four new images to explore in that direction. It’s a great way to discover more variations and details within your chosen image. Here I clicked the “right arrow” pan button.
  • Heart Icon: The heart icon allows you to mark an image as a favorite, saving it for later reference or enjoyment. You can view them on Midjourney’s web site.
  • Web Button: By clicking the “Web” button, you’ll be directed to Midjourney’s website. If you log in using your Discord credentials, you’ll gain access to your personal image gallery. This includes all of the images you have generated. From here, you can also explore and discover the creations of other users by clicking on the “Explore” option. It’s a great way to see what the Midjourney community has been up to and find inspiration from the works of others.

Now, let’s dive deeper into the world of images. Descriptions can be as detailed and imaginative as you’d like. Here’s an example command you can use to generate a unique image:

“/imagine A cat with fur of fire and eyes that glow like a supernova staring at me.”

This command will conjure up an image that matches your more detailed description. Again, I have to go with number 3.

Feel free to let your creativity run wild and experiment with various image requests!

You can further customize your Midjourney experience by accessing the settings using the “/settings” command.

This enables you to tweak various aspects to suit your preferences. If you’re curious about the specifics of these settings, you can explore the detailed documentation at https://docs.midjourney.com/docs/settings-and-presets.

This resource will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the options available for personalizing your Midjourney usage.

In conclusion, Midjourney offers a fascinating journey into the realm of AI-generated images through Discord. With the power to transform your text into stunning visuals, it opens up a world of creative possibilities.

Whether you choose to collaborate in Midjourney’s Discord community or create your private server for added privacy, you have the flexibility to craft unique images to suit your preferences.

With Midjourney, the possibilities are limitless, and your creativity knows no bounds.

So, embrace this innovative tool and embark on a visual journey that reflects your unique imagination and style.

Happy creating!
